Pierre van der Eng, Associate Professor in International Business, Research School of Management, Australian National University & Visiting Professor, Center for Chinese Entrepreneur Studies, Institute of Economics, Tsinghua University.  His research interests range across economic history, development economics, business history, and international business. 

Abstract

This presentation applies insights from multi-country research on the relationship between exchange rates and economic growth by Reinhart and Rogoff (2004) and Rodrik (2008) to the long-term economic history of Indonesia. The presentation analyses the relationship between different exchange rate systems and long-term economic growth through the changes in the terms of trade and the real effective exchange rates that the country’s trade-exposed producers faced. The purpose of this one-country case study is to take account of the nuances of exchange rate systems and the economic context that impact on growth.
